Tuesday, October 05, 2004 News: Sandwich Selection Could Boost Sex, Help Hangovers According to John Stanley, a lecturer in biochemistry at Trinity College, Oxford University in the UK, “Choosing the right sandwich can help you recover from a hangover and even perform better in bed.” He recommends ... ... a toasted chocolate and banana sandwich as the best way to get through that “morning after the night before feeling” as it provides a quick release of sugars and minerals to help restore #### sugar levels. Another sandwich designed by Mr Stanley includes figs - popular with the ancient Greeks for increased fertility and sexual stamina - and honey, a key ingredient in love potions during the Middle Ages. Add some ricotta cheese and orange segments and you’ve got an aphrodisiac sandwich, he claims. Before a business meeting, snack on a chicken tikka and mango salsa sandwich to stay alert. The protein in the chicken encourages the brain to produce neurotransmitters which help a person stay awake and alert, while the sandwich also contains several vitamins and minerals which combat tiredness and fatigue. And for a good workout in the gym he suggests apple and peanut butter filling as this sandwich has a low glycemic index which provides a slow, steady stream of energy to sustain the body during exercise. The final sandwich - smoked turkey with cream cheese - can apparently help guarantee a good night’s sleep as turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan which encourages the brain to produce the feel-good hormone serotonin. Meanwhile, the cheese has calcium and vitamin B12 which is essential for the production of neurotransmitters that control sleep patterns. Now, the only question is, will you have that on white, wheat, rye, sourdough, or a bagel?
